Beach Sherpa

Beach Sherpa

/beech ˈSHərpə/ noun

Definition: A family member tasked with carrying all the beach gear because the family is not quite grand enough to have help.

Etymology

From beach, meaning a place where one goes to relax, and Sherpa, referring to the skilled Himalayan guides known for carrying supplies through difficult terrain. In preppy coastal usage, the term has been lovingly repurposed for the person hauling chairs, umbrellas, coolers, tote bags, toys, and emotional baggage across sand, stairs, dunes, or club walkways.

As I was walking to the beach with family, navigating down what felt like 500 stairs with chairs and bags, we mused, “I wonder what the Preppy Dictionary term is for when you’re too poor to have help so you’re stuck carrying your own beach gear?” And at that point, Beach Sherpa was born.

Usage

Context:A Beach Sherpa is not necessarily the least glamorous person in the group, just the most burdened. Often a dad, son-in-law, husband, or overprepared friend, the Beach Sherpa makes the entire beach day possible while receiving very little credit until someone realizes they forgot the sunscreen, which he is also carrying.

In a sentence: “By the time we reached the sand, Charles had three chairs, two totes, an umbrella, and a cooler strapped to him like a true Beach Sherpa.”
